Q&A: What are the alternatives to the services of Indian meteorological department in India?
Question by ashish m: What are the alternatives to the services of Indian meteorological department in India?
IMD serves various sectors such as agriculture, aviation, fisheries and other govt. departments and general public by providing services such as weather forecasting, cyclone and other disaster related warnings, agrometeorological, hydrometeorological services etc. I want to know whether there are any other alternatives in India for such services, who do not just copy the IMD’s data on their websites but really carry out the studies and give their own results and forecasts.

The only alternative is through the private sector. It may not be free, but in order to get quality work that is not funded through public finances, you will usually have to pay for it. There are also plenty of model data out there, but I am not sure how accurate those data have been for India. One possibility is if you can get a hold of forecast made for airports that are written up by the airline meteorologists. However, you will need to lean the how to read these coded forecast and are limited to locations where that airline will have routes to.
